ROUND 1 - LOSAIL, QATAR

Japan roars back
Troy Corser won the rain-hit first race - a first part lead by 4.1sec enabling him to hold off Xerox Ducati's Régis Laconi, along with his Alstare Corona Suzuki team-mate Yukio Kagayama...but the race was not without a lot of incident, even before the start. Jose Luis Cardoso on the DFXtreme Sterilgarda Yamaha R1 had his engine cut out on the grid, and with the slipper clutches now used in WSB, even spinning the back wheel with a dedicated motor and "dumping" the clutch wasn't enough to get the engine started and he was out of Race 1. It has been reported that the fault was traced eventually to a RUSTY fuelling connector...RUSTY??...someone's not doing their job!
Pierfrancesco Chili ( (Klaffi Honda Fireblade) was also out with a technical problem after not even completing the first lap and Alessio Velini (Pedercini Ducati) blew his engine on Lap 8 and was also out - but the race was halted 2 laps later because of rain, with Corser holding a 4 second advantage...but Régis Laconi had taken the fastest lap.
With World Endurance Champion Sebastien Gimbert (Yamaha France), Lorenzo Lanzi (SC Caracchi Ducati) and Max Neukirchner (Klaffi Honda Fireblade) crashing out of the second part of race one, the overall result went to Corser, with Kagayama coning second in an Alstare Corona Suzuki 1-2, Laconi third, 10 seconds ahead of Andrew Pitt (Yamaha Italia R1) in 4th.
LACONI -
"I made a so-so start and just tried to pass the guys in front of me immediately because I was fourth on the first lap. It feels tough to finish second in both races and end up third overall but those are the regulations and I am just happy to be on the podium"
TOSELAND - "I got two good starts and we hung in there. I was two-tenths off getting fifth in the aggregate but considering everything that's happened this week, it's a solid start. The confidence is coming again, I needed some dry time and I can only get that in the races"
KAGAYAMA - I think I was a bit lucky in the first race when it was stopped because for the re-start, I was able to make some small adjustments and my GSX-R1000 felt much better."
CORSER - "I found it pretty easy in the first race and felt relaxed and comfortable up front. The bike was working great and the only problem was when it started raining. I knew that we would have to stop because we were all on slicks, so I put my hand up and the race was red-flagged. By the time we got going again, the track was dry again so I think we were all on slicks once more. Yukio made the break and I just hung with Regis Laconi knowing that I didn't have to beat him to take the win. It's been a long time since my last win in 2001, but I hadn't forgotten the winning feeling."

Race 2 saw fast charging Ivan Silva Albertola (La Glisse Yamaha R1) crash at the first corner after being hit by Jose Luis Cardoso who also also crashed a few seconds later. Silva restarted but blew his engine later in the race. Karl Muggeridge (Winston Ten Kate Honda) attempted an inside pass on Chris Walker (PSG-1 Kawasaki) but hit him with 8 laps to go in the race and both riders were out - and Fonsi Nieto (SC Caracchi Ducati) also stuffed Marco Borciani on the inside of a corner, with Borciani surprised enough to crash his DFXtreme Sterilgarda Yamaha R1.
Up front, Corser was having problems with grip from his front tyre and was first passed by team-mate Kagayama, then by Régis Laconi - and Kagayama went on to score his first win in World Superbikes.
The fastest lap was taken by Yamaha France's Sebastien Gimbert at 2' 01.852, who finished in 10th place.
LACONI -
"I tried to catch Yukio in the final laps but it wasn't easy and when I saw it was easy to slide I told myself to just ride and settle for second and that's what I did. I did the best that I could do today and it was important for me to start the championship with two results, unlike last year, and get my season off to a good start"
TOSELAND - "Two sixths from thirteenth place is OK, as far as the championship goes I'm joint fifth, which is not what I wanted but at least it's solid. Towards the end of the race I was lapping as quick as the leaders. After Sunday's crash I needed some dry time and I just didn't get it. We haven't been able to try everything we wanted and that made the whole weekend difficult for me. I'm disappointed but I know I could have been out for a couple of rounds with last week's crash, so I'll take these results any day"
CORSER - In the second race I was leading and then the oil flags came out on the approach to turn one so I ran a bit wide and eased off the throttle. I still nearly crashed, but Yukio dived underneath. I tried to catch him straight away, but he'd pulled out a bit of a gap. My front was a bit chewed up and I knew I couldn't stay ahead of Regis, so I let him past. It's great to win and it's great to be on the podium with a perfect start for our team. The only thing that would have been better is if I had won both races! But my favourite circuit, Phillip Island, is next so maybe I can do a double there."
KAGAYAMA - "Today I am a very happy man. I did not dream that I would win a World Superbike race so soon or that I would be leading the Championship after the opening round. I was happy to be on the podium in the first race, so after the win in the second, I am twice as happy! In race two, the track temperature was lower and I felt that my bike would work better and it did! When Troy ran wide, I passed under him and took the lead and from then on I was able to pull out an advantage. Troy had gone wide because of some oil on the track and nearly lost control and I also felt a bit of a slide, but I carried on ok. At the end, I just had to watch my pit board and keep steady for the win."

Yukio Kagayama now leads the Championship standings with 45 points, Troy Corser 41 points and Régis Laconi 36 points

WHERE IS WOKKA? - UPDATE to the UPDATE
From Warwick Nowland...dateline1st February 2005

"Yesterday, I agreed to return to the Endurance World Championship with the charismatic Phase One Yamaha Team. 5 years have passed since we joined forces to win the 2000 Endurance World Championship and I am looking forward to working with my mates again. 2005 will also be the first time in 5 years that I won't be racing a Suzuki motorcycle. Spending 5 years on one make of motorcycle and 4 years with one team has been great but now, I think it is time to try different things.

Phase One are entering their second year with the impressive Yamaha R1 and team manager Russell Benney has told me the bike will be faster than the factory Suzuki. Nice! The bike looks great as does the package of Dunlop tyres, a team with more than 20 years experience, team mates Damian Cudlin and Andi Notman, and of course my determination!

I had been waiting for an answer from another team for a few weeks but that didn’t work out. The last 4 weeks have been horrible, it was really bad timing. But that’s over now and I am really motivated, actually, more than ever. I really want to win the Endurance World Championship… again. In 2003 I felt it was my Championship until silly things got in the way. I am obsessed with winning and after the effort I put in last year, for it to amount to nothing, I’m angry, it’s time to do something great.

I will make it clear that this is for 1 year. I want to return to Superbike and I am working on that now.

As I previously mentioned, coming back to Endurance is a great thing for me. I have spoken to people at circuits that host MotoGP, SBK and Endurance, and their favourite event… Endurance!

With only a handful of Endurance races this year, I will also be involved in another activity that I can speak about soon.

Now I can spend the next month getting ready. I’m looking forward to getting acquainted with the Yamaha R1 during 2 days at Eastern Creek later this month. The first shake down aboard the Phase One Yamaha will be at Albacete in Spain on the 17/18th of March with a 2 day test. The first round of the 2005 FIM Endurance World Championship will be held at Assen on March 28. I learnt a lot there on the Superbike, I can’t wait!"

We have found WOKKA...though he's already sold his old leathers...!

HONDA AUSTRIA UPDATE
The good news is that Erwin Wilding is out of intensive care after his serious crash in Macau - but what's worrying is that he remains in a coma. We have had our fingers crossed for months and remain hopeful.

DIABLO 666 NEWS

With the 2005 Season only a few weeks away, Team Diablo 666 Bolliger Kawasaki are busily preparing to launch another successful campaign in the World Endurance Racing Championship.  The ZX-10 Kawasaki’s are once again being prepared by Hanspeter Bolliger and his team under the watchful eye of Diablo’s own Geoff Randall. Geoff brings to the Team a wealth of experience with his years with many of the top teams in British Superbikes. After a successful first season with the new ZX-10’s, which in the 2004 season were run totally standard, plans are afoot to increase the BHP sensibly without affecting reliability. In standard form, running without top spec race and qualifying tyres, many superbike riders commented on how quick the Diablo riders were on the standard machines. In 2005, the Diablo Kawasaki’s will still not be running at full superbike spec level without the substantial further funding needed...a disadvantage that the talented riders will again have to make up for.
In the five rounds entered by Diablo during 2004, the only mechanical problem encountered was a loose oil filter spraying out oil as the sun was rising at the Oschersleben 24 hr race after nearly 18 hours. This was the only DNF that the Team suffered during 2004 and illustrates the professionalism of Geoff Randall and the Bolliger mechanics.

The riders this year will be James Hutchins and Kevin Falcke with young German rider Steve Mizera, seconded from the Bolliger Kawasaki Team for the final round of the 2004 season at Vallelunga. Here the team secured a fantastic 9th position, being the first non superbike spec machine home. These riders will again provide one of the most talented young rider combinations available in World Endurance racing.

The backup team for the forthcoming season will again comprise
Team Principal, Miles Hutchins,
Team Manager, former WEC Champion (x2), British Superbike Champion and GP rider Terry Rymer,
Senior Mechanic Geoff Randall, assisted by Mechanics Mark and John Currier.
Bolliger Kawasaki team pit crew members will again be assisting with regular pit stops, refuelling and tyre changes. Bolliger Kawasaki provide without question the most professional pit crew back up in the entire WEC paddock, having gained many years experience racing at the highest level of endurance racing.

2005 Pre-season testing
Plans are currently being made for pre-season testing during February and March, where full shake down tests of the up-rated ZX-10’s will be carried out.
All is in place for another exciting season with the newest top British Team in WEC. The one main limiting factor for the Team could again be the lack of funding needed to run at this level of World Championship. Due to lack of funding, a DNF at Oschersleben, being unable to enter the 8hr Suzuka race during 2004 and to carry out much needed testing on the new ZX-10’s, the Team’s final Championship position was seriously affected. Without these setbacks, a top ten placing in the Team’s first full season had looked on the cards. The Team are aiming to put that right in 2005!

More than 300,000 visitors a month is a dream for most web-page owners. 300,000 visitors daily is no dream, though...this is reality for www.6news.at - the most visited erotic website and magazine in Austria. January 2005 starts a 3 year cooperation between YART and 6NEWS. Linking 6news to YART will mean that Yamaha Austria's homepage will become probably the most visited Endurance website. The nice 6NEWS grid-girls will also fill up the grandstand of each Endurance Race and make the YART Superbikes the most photographed bike on the Grid. For sure it will make each Endurance Race more "popular"!
