RACE RESULTS - ONCE AGAIN STORMS FORCE AN EARLY FINISH!

Just 6¾ hours into the race, 75 minutes to go and, as in 2002 when the race was red flagged for a few hours, an electrical storm descended on the track, forcing and early end to proceedings. From the start of the weekend, "local" (they are, in fact, Austrian) favourites and Le Mans 24 hr winners Yamaha Austria were faster than everyone and backed up their total dominance in qualifying with a win from the front, finishing the shortened race 4 laps ahead of the field. More news when it arrives!

OFFICIAL REPORT:
The 2009 8 Hours of Oschersleben finally lasted 6 h 40! The race had to be interrupted after being hit by a strong thunderstorm and finally stopped as the weather forecast was quite pessimistic for the coming hours. Leading the race from almost the beginning, Igor Jerman, Steve Martin and Gwen Giabbani took victory on the Yamaha Austria Racing Team with a four laps lead over the competition. YART strengthens his favourite status for the 2009 Qtel FIM Endurance World Championship title. After two victories at Le Mans and Oschersleben, YART leads now the championship by 28 points. YART won at Oschersleben ahead of the Italian Yamaha Amadeus X-One of Paolo Tessari, Will Gruy and Ayrton Badovini. Amadeus X-One have taken their first podium after a faultless race and takes the third place in the championship after two races. Third in Germany, RT Racing Team had a fantastic race with Jean-Louis Devoyon, Frédéric Jond and David Morillon. The Franco-Italian Suzuki had always been in the leading group during the race.

Behind them, two teams could have made a come-back towards the end of the race. The Team 18 Sapeurs Pompiers and their Suzuki ridden by Stéphane Molinier, David Brière and Jérôme Tangre finished near the podium, less than one minute from RT Racing Team. Same for Kawasaki Bolliger Switzerland of Horst Saiger, Rico Penzkoffer and Eric Mizera, in fifth place. BK Maco Moto Racing Team was very well placed at the beginning of the race, but they stepped back in sixth place after some fuel pump problems, ahead of AM Moto Racing Competition. The French Suzuki lost some ground in the middle of the race as the gearshift support broke down. The German RMT 21 Racing Germany is eighth, ahead of Suzuki MCS Racing Ipone and the Honda Michelin Power Research Team.

Potential winner and great rival of Yamaha Austria, Honda Michelin Power Research Team lost the pace after three hours of battle with YART, as they had a problem with a stand during a pit stop, then they lost a lot of time as their chain broke down and last but not least they had a crash involving a delayed rider. Bad luck was also with the British team of Phase One Endurance. Starting from the fifth place on the grid, Damian Cudlin crashed after a few laps. Back in the top 10, the British Yamaha was then delayed by a battery problem. Finally, a crash from Pedro Vallcaneras around 8 pm forced Phase One to retire. The Kawasaki Atomic MotoSport also had to retire after their gearbox broke down, as they were holding strongly a third place in the Superstock class.

In the Superstock class, the victory goes to Qatar Endurance Racing Team with Mashel Al Naimi, Rashid Al Mannai and Anthony Delhalle. They managed to hold back the pressure from Yamaha LTG 57 Zone Rouge, with Franck Millet, Branko Srdanov and Michael Lalevée. The Suzuki Endurance Moto 45 with Alexandre Lagrive, Adrien Ganfornina and Nicolas Jaulneau completes the Superstock podium.

The next round of the Qtel FIM Endurance World Championship is the 8 Hours of Albacete, Saturday 4th of July, in Spain.

TEAM VENTAIR ZONE ROUGE No.15 - 8th IN CLASS

JOAO FERNANDEZ RACE REPORT:
It wasn’t an easy task for Joao Fernandes but he managed it well. After a good start into the 8hours race in Oschersleben (GER) Fernandes worked hard to suit the team mates pace on the long distance tires from Pirelli (the team used an SC4 Pirelli tires in the rear which is good enough for 2 hours in race conditions). They both could follow the top runners in the Superstock Class by only 2 sec down a lap. But after 3 hours the fuel pump made problems and the bike could not use the full amount of revs – therefore the bike was less powerful. After pulling in to change the pump further problems occurred and cost the team high valuable 15 minutes. So the team joined the race in after the pit stop in 33th position only with 4 laps down to next in the class. A strong ride by Joao’s team mate Sylvain Kapusi brought the team back in touch with the Top 10 in the Superstock Class. Meanwhile Rico Penzkofer (Macau Racing Team rider in the international road races) on board of the Bolliger Kawasaki fighting for the podium of the race. Regular Macau Grand Prix Contenders and SKSupport’ client YART from Austria comfortably lead the race all time long finishing on top of the podium – the second race win in a row for the championship leaders of the 2009 World Endurance campaign. Joao’s team came in 8th position of the Superstock category and Penzkofer finished 5th in the Superbike with the Bolliger Kawasaki. Joao Fernandes:”It was a tough race but I had good fun and enjoyed the race. But of course I also saw that I have to work hard for the next race to match the team’s expectations. Its World Championship level and I really wanna go back for the full campaign – maybe we can find a way to do so. It was a great atmosphere and very competitive. I will now go to the TT and will take some time to think about what I need to gain the final 10 % to be with the bests for the next race. I can’t really express myself how I feel at the moment. Everything seems to work out right now and I am really looking forward to the next projects of the Macau Racing Team.” Joao Fernandes will now fly to the Isle of Man together with his team mates Rico Penzkofer and will experience what it is like to ride on the same road as all the legends have done before from Reed to Agostini – from Fogarty to McGuiness.

FRIDAY QUALIFYING TIMES ROUND-UP

Nothing changed on the starting grid after the Superpole, which just took place
at Oschersleben with the ten best qualified teams.

Yamaha Austria Racing Team will start the 8 Hours of Oschersleben in pole position tomorrow afternoon, ahead of the Honda Michelin Power Research Team and the Kawasaki Bolliger Team Switzerland.

Steve Martin on the YART posted the best lap of 1.27'205, ahead of William Costes in 1.27'74 on the Honda Michelin and Horst Saiger, the Kawasaki Bolliger rider, on 1.28'151.

Behind the leading trio, the Superpole looked like musical chairs, with the Honda
RMT 21 Racing Germany doing their best time with Chris Zaiser, who clocked the
Oschersleben 3667 meters track in 1.28'350.

This allows the German Honda to finally get in front of the British Yamaha of Phase One Endurance and the Slovakian Yamaha of BK Maco Moto Racing Team on the starting grid.

AM Moto Racing Competition gained no profit from Superpole and they remain in seventh place. However, RT Racing Team lost two positions on the grid, to the benefit of Amadeus
X-One and Team 18 Sapeurs Pompiers.

The warm-up of the 8 Hours of Oschersleben, the second round of the Qtel FIM Endurance

OSCHERSLEBEN 8 STUNDE FREE PRACTICE TIMES

MANDY KAINZ/YAMAHA AUSTRIA No.7: "The opening day of our 'home event' was split in 3 supplementary practices and 1 official free practice. The first session was wet, all three other sessions were run in dry conditions. Our Michelin tires worked in all conditions perfectly and in all 4 sessions YART could set the pace with the fastest Laps. So we are happy and hope that the rest of the week will go on like today"
