Silverstone
200 Miles Round 2 19th May 2002
At the
start of the race, the GMT94 Suzuki GSXR1000 Superproduction machine got the
holeshot, followed closely by Warwick Nowland on the
Zongshen No.2 Suzuki, Phase One’s Spike Edwards in 3rd with
the Zongshen No.9 machine in 4th. American Dave Estok, riding for the Herman
Verboven No.5 team alongside John Jacobi and Mike Ciccotto, also made a great
start, slotting into 6th just behind the local wild-card heroes,
Roundstone-Trackdaze No.55 GSXR with Brit Chris Burns on board but World
Champions Wim Motors got baulked at the line and having
qualified in a lowly 15th place, riders Naveau/Aerts and Platacis had a lot of
time to make up. They were at one time down in 24th but sterling work
by both riders took them into the top ten by the end of the race.
By the end of the first lap, the Zongshen No.2 bike was leading and Spike
Edwards on the Phase One machine was sizing up GMT94 to take
second, with Zongshen 9 in fourth and lap times already into
the 1’54” bracket.
The Roundstone boys put up a good fight and stayed in fifth until mechanical
problems robbed them of any result and put them out of the
race after only 5 laps. Nick Yardley’s Bikeshire mob also
had engine problems and coasted into the pits - and with their garage at
the far end of pit lane, the mechanics had quite a bit of running and pushing to
do - but they got going again and were back in the race.
The two mandatory pit stops were completed without major incident for the
leaders, although Igor Jerman on the N0.9 Zongshen GSXR1000 had a problem with
his seat coming off near the end of his first session and having to grab hold of
it during his last few laps, which held him up somewhat. The No.5 Herman
Verboven rider Dave Estok overcooked his tyres early and was riding steadily
until being passed by one too many other bikes brought the red mist down and he
high-sided on the lap before his pit stop. He was harder on himself than the
team was, nearly in tears as he brought the bike in. Team Dap Motormax Unisson
were also going well until the bike was brought clattering down the pit line
with a trashed gearbox.
Apart from some minor swaps during the second session, by the time all mandatory
pit stops had been completed the No.2 Zongshen bike with Warwick Nowland was
leading by around 20 seconds, with Mike Edwards on the No.3 Phase One bike
gradually pulling away from GMT94 and Christophe Guyot in 3rd.
A small
crash by No.20 Team Infini Moto and Russell Baker was the only incident close to
the end of the race and the top three positions stayed the same as 200 miles
were completed and the Zongshen Team took their first win in the World Endurance
Championship – and from the vastly improved quality of their pit work, this
won’t be the last win this season.
The stop press item is that the Herman Verboven No.5 team seem to have mis-interpreted
the rules and told Mike Ciccotto to stay out for the
final session instead of changing riders as he was supposed
to do (John Jacobi should have gone out). The team have been euphemistically
“awarded”
a 1-minute penalty, which has dropped them out of their fifth position at the
end of the race. They could have been even higher but a minor incident in the
pits cost them seconds when one of the mechanics attempted to put in a rear
without having a sprocket on the wheel.
Here
is the Herman Verboven Teams' response to their plight:
"At the teamchef meeting
someone asked whether a could remain in the saddle after a pit stop. The answer
was: “Yes, but he has to rest for two third of his driven time.” Hence we
supposed Michael Ciccotto, who was riding a superb race, could remain on the
bike after his pit stop (at John Jacobi’s expense) and we decided to do so.
Afterwards it appeared that the FIM-regulations say this is not allowed
(which we also thought, but since it had been contradicted at the teamchef
meeting …). This misunderstanding would cost us an unnecessary one minute
penalty and 5 places in the final ranking.
We will remember the
Silverstone 200 for quite a while, but unfortunately that won’t bring many
happy thoughts. However, with the new experiences and willing to have our
revenge Herman Verboven Racing will surely race itself in the picture again at
Brno, in a positive way again, like Imola!"
